The PIT is participating in New York Cares Day Spring this year!  It’s actually TOMORROW.

Along with NYCDS being a day of community service, it’s also a chance to fundraise.  We’re asking YOU to support us by making a donation to New York Cares in honor of our service. Your donation will help 400,000 New Yorkers in need.

Every dollar donated to New York Cares is transformed into $6 in service to the community. I hope you’ll sponsor us as we volunteer. Learn more about New York Cares at http://www.newyorkcares.org.

Would you like to donate?  Click here!

Thank you so much!

Site Assignment: Rufus King Park

Where:  Rufus King Park, Jamaica Ave and 153rd Street, Queens, NY 11435

Take E, J or Z to Jamaica Center (last stop). Exit station and walk north towards Jamaica Avenue. The park is between
Jamaica Avenue and 89th Avenue and 150th Street and 153rd Street.

What: On New York Cares Day Spring, volunteers will be giving the park a major makeover by repainting benches, repainting playground equipment, and painting a mural in the children’s sprinkler.

Volunteers should bring plenty of water and a bagged lunch. They should also wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothes that they do not mind getting dirty.

About the park:  King Manor Museum and Park in Jamaica was once the home of Rufus King (1755-1827), a distinguished lawyer, statesman, and gentleman farmer. The son of a wealthy lumber merchant from Maine, King graduated from Harvard in 1777. He suspended his law studies to serve in the Revolutionary War in 1778. Two years later, King was admitted to the bar in Massachusetts. He served as a member of the Confederation Congress from 1784 to 1787, where he introduced a plan that prevented the spread of slavery into the Northwest Territories. King was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787, and made his most famous contribution to American history as a framer and signer of the Constitution.

Message to our volunteers:

Just a reminder about Saturday. It is rain or shine but if the weather is very bad NYCares will advise on what the plan is and I will relay to each of you.

Our park:  Bowne Park, 159th Street, between 29th & 32nd Ave. Flushing, NY

If you are going directly to the site, please get there between 9-9:30am.  You will sign in and get your t-shirt there.  If you are taking the shuttle (with me!) we will sign in at the New York Cares office (214 W. 29th Street) at around 8:15am.

Also there is a pizza place and deli about 2 blocks away or bring a bagged lunch and water. Hopefully the weather is not too bad but dress accordingly in case - aka you might want to bring some rain gear.  The current forecast says PM showers so we might be in the clear!

And remember, the projects on site will be raking, a small gardening portion and painting the park benches.  So dress appropriately.

Our site captain’s name is Jessica and she’s been very helpful so far.  If you get to the site before me, please say hello to her!  The back of her shirt will say “Site Captain” on it.  :)

Hope to see everyone and if there are any questions let me know!

Just wanted to update everyone and send out a few reminders. I visited the Site Saturday and it is a very nice Park. The projects on site will be raking, a small gardening portion and painting the park benches. It is a mid size park in a residential area.

Just a side note:  There is a pizzeria about 2-3 blocks from the park and a food store/deli for food in case any one wants to buy their lunch.
